the 4 different Types of droughts
Australia is one of the driest continents in the world and droughts are a massive part of that. Since the first ever drought recorded in 1791 there hasn't been one single decade where a part of Australia has not been in and suffered from drought. Drought is said to often be difficult to monitor and define, it is the absence of water and can operate on many different scales. There are 4 main types of drought which have been developed to help measure and define the droughts all around the world including Australia.
The 4 main types of droughts are: Meteorological, Agricultural, Hydrological and Socioeconomic.
Meteorological droughts is named by the degree of dryness it has and the duration of the dry period.
Agricultural droughts occurs when there isn't enough soil moisture to meet the needs of a particular crop at a particular time.
Hydrological droughts are associated with the effects of periods of precipitation shortfalls on surface or subsurface water supply like lake levels and groundwater.
Socioeconomic droughts associate the supply and demand of some economic good with elements of other types of drought.
